Herbal Facial Steams

Facial steams are a deeply relaxing, healing, and nourishing way to care for your complexion. They draw fresh blood to the surface of the skin, opening the pores and drawing out oil and impurities. Adding herbs to your facial steam will relax the senses and decrease stress, can help open the airways during a chest or head cold, and will deliver plant nutrients to deep layers of the skin- leaving you with a fresh, glowing complexion.

There are many herbal combinations you can use for an herbal facial steam. If you’re making your own formula, use herbs specifically healing for the skin. Some of our favorite herbs to use for facial steams include:

To make an herbal facial steam:

Bring a tall pot of water to a boil (about 2-3 quarts of water). Use a tall or large pot so the pot has space to accumulate steam. If you use a smaller pot, you will need a towel to drape over your head to keep the steam in.

Add your herbs of choice, simmer for a minute or two, then turn off heat.

Place your face over the steaming herbal water. If you use a tall pot with space for the steam, you won’t need a towel. If you used a small pot, drape your towel over the back of your head while you steam.

Stir the pot as needed while keeping your head over the pot. Steam for 8-10 minutes for best results.

When done, pat your skin dry, and spritz with a facial toner or cool water to close pores.

For Dry To Normal Skin

-3 parts comfrey leaf

-2 parts calendula flowers

-2 parts chamomile blossoms

-2 parts rose petals

-1 part lavender flowers

For Normal to Oily Skin

-3 parts comfrey leaf

-2 parts yarrow flowers

-1 part raspberry leaf

-1 part nettle leaf

-1 part rosemary leaf

Step By Step Herbal Facial Steam:

Mix all your herbs together. You can adjust the amounts to suit your skin type, or add herbs of your choice.

Store in a glass, airtight container, away from direct sunlight.

To use, bring 2-3 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add a handful of your herbal mixture, and let simmer with the lid on for 1-2 minutes.

Turn off heat, and steam your face for 8-10 minutes.

When done, pat skin dry, and finish with a few sprays of facial toner or cold water to close pores.
